Product Description
Isoxsuprine is in a class of drugs called vasodilators. Isoxsuprine relaxes veins and arteries, which makes them wider and allows blood to pass through them more easily. These actions may help treat the symptoms of conditions such as cerebral vascular insufficiency (poor blood flow to the brain), arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Raynaud's phenomenon, and other conditions involving poor blood flow in the veins and arteries.
Indications and Usage: Possibly Effective For the relief of symptoms associated with cerebral vascular insufficiency. In peripheral vascular disease of arteriosclerosis obliterans, thromboangitis obliterans (Buerger's Disease) and Raynaud's disease. Reduce the risk of the need for BPH-related surgery.
Pharmacology:
Mechanism of Action: Vasospastic therapy adjunct and senility symptoms treatment adjunctIsoxsuprine producesperipheral vasodilation by a direct effect on vascular smooth muscle, primarily within skeletal muscle with little effect on cutaneous blood flow. Its effects were once thought to be due to beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation but are not reversed by beta-adrenergic blocking agents.Labor (premature) inhibitor and antidysmenorrhealIsoxsuprine produces uterine relaxation through a direct effect on smooth muscles.
Pharmacokinetics: Isoxsuprine is an -receptor antagonist with -receptor agonist action. It causes peripheral and cerebral vasodilatation by directly acting on vascular smooth muscle. It also causes cardiac and uterine relaxation. Absorption:Well absorbed from the GI tract (oral); peak plasma concentrations after 1 hour. Excretion:Via urine (as conjugates); 1.5 hours (elimination half-life).
Drug Interactions: May potentiate effects of other vasodilators/hypotensive agents. Smoking, tobacco (concurrent heavy use may interfere with the therapeutic effects of isoxsuprine because nicotine constricts blood vessels).
Contraindications: Recent arterial haemorrhage. Do not give immediately postpartum and do not use in prematurelabour if there is an infection.
